On February 19, 2019 Garland Herbert Overfelt, Sr., left his earthly home and peacefully entered the Kingdom of Heaven. He was born on November 25, 1929 in Callaway, VA, to the late Walter and Lizzie Overfelt. Garland enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950, serving on ships until 1961 when he served on The USS Long Beach, the world’s first nuclear powered cruiser to circle the globe without refueling twice. Garland retired from the Navy and went to work as a mechanic at Kroger Company for 20 years. Garland had a love for flowers and his music. He always had a song to sing. He loved spending spare time in his garden or piddling around. When he wasn’t gardening he was with his family. He is preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his brothers, Daniel, George, Paul, W.M; sisters, Emma and Frances; Garland is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois Overfelt; children; Robbie (Melonie), Greg, Carla (Scott), Garland, Jr. (Linda) and Lori (Tim); grandchildren, Nicole, Sam, Jonathan, Kelly, Courtney, Hunter (Alexis) and William; great-grandchildren, Kinzie, Joshua, Brooklyn, Aiden, Jackoby; sister, Mary-Catherine; sister-in-law, Goldie; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Garland also is survived by his best buddy/great grandson, Trevor Ayersman. Special thanks to Garland’s earthly angels (caregivers) Nicole, Ashley Sutphin, Brenda St. Clair, Sharon Davis, Erin Turner, Melissa Royalty and others. Also special thanks to the Hospice Team Jeanetta, Tia, Michelle and others at Amedisys Hospice. The family will receive family and friends Sunday, February 24, 2019 from 5-7 p.m.at Flora Funeral Home Rocky Mount, VA. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2019 with Pastor Jake Huffman officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park with military honors. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
