Gene Keith Waltrip, age 80 of Rocky Mount died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 after a long illness.
He was retired from C.L. Waltrip, Inc. and served in the U.S. Army during 1944 and 1945, reaching the rank of Corporal while performing as a drill instructor. During his military time, he was awarded “Soldier of the Month” several times, an honor he was very proud of.
Gene was a member of the Boones Mill Lions Club, known to his Lions club family for selling “pot-o-gold tickets”.
He was one of eleven children born to Thomas and Martha Wilson Waltrip of James City County, Virginia.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 42 years, Jean B. Waltrip; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Ben Snead, Victoria and Dan Cullather, Pace and Michael Martin; sons and daughter-in-law, Keith Waltrip, Kevin and Jennie Waltrip; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Gene is also survived by his sister, Peggy W. Zuzma; brothers Lewis C. Waltrip and Mahlon Waltrip; numerous other relatives in Williamsburg.
A memorial service will be conducted from Jamestown Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 7, 2008.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Boones Mill Lions Club, Earl Hoy Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 517, Boones Mill, VA 24065 or to Phoebe Needles Center, 730 Turners Creek Road, Callaway, VA 24067.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 5, 2008 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
