George Hayward Mattox, 86 of Rocky Mount passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015. He was a Sergeant in the United States Air Force (1947-1950) then served in the Army Reserves (1954-1957). He was born December 13, 1928, a son of the late Otha Wade and Mary Jane Mattox. Also, he was preceded in death by his sons, Tony and Mark Mattox, brothers, Clyde, Edward and Wesley Mattox; sister, Norma Jean Akers. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Jean; daughters, Lorie Wiseman (Fred) and Betsy Gallatin (Rodney); grandchildren, Brad, Jared (Kristen), Brianna, Dawn (Bradford), Freddie (Morgan), Magen, Ethen (Amanda) and Carmen; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Nelson (Dick) Mattox; special friend, Ellis Davis; The family extends special thanks to Donnie Akers (Kathy), Bob and Becky Strickler, Gerald and Diane Young, Irene Shively, Dr. Charles and Helen Lamb, VA Medical Center and Franklin County Hospice. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Franklin Memorial Park with Rev. Harry Shelton and Rev. John Collins officiating.
