George Washington Nunley, age 81 of Callaway, Va. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Fork Mountain Rest Home where he resided for the past 18 months. He enjoyed living at Fork Mountain Rest Home and being able to talk with residents and staff. The staff took excellent care of George and his needs and he was loved by all as family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Livie Nunley and father, John Nunley; brother, Lewis Nunley; sister-in-law, Virginia Nunley; and first cousin, Catherine Westfall of Ohio. George is survived by one first cousin, Reba Hudson Carter of Rocky Mount and several second cousins along with their extended family. A special thank you to Irla Whitlow for her numerous visits to George at Fork Mountain Rest Home which he appreciated so very much. George enjoyed farming for over 50 years. He sold fresh produce such as corn, peaches, potatoes, green beans, squash, beets and much more produce in the summer. He also made Christmas wreaths in the winter. In June, 2004 he won a plaque in Recognition of Extraordinary Commitment to the Betterment of Downtown Roanoke known as “Chairman’s Award”. George was blessed with loving, kind and helpful neighbors, friends and family. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Church of the Brethren in Boones Mill, Va. The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount on Saturday, November 18, 2017 with visitation from 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. with funeral at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bill Hinton officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Boones Mill, Va.
