George William Overfelt, age 85 passed peacefully from his home in Saint Augustine, Florida to his heavenly home on Monday, May 8, 2023. He was born November 30, 1937, to Ruth Draper Overfelt, whom he joins in Heaven. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Betty Murphy Overfelt. He is also survived by his son, Wm. Michael Overfelt and wife Kate; daughter, Cynthia Overfelt Stinson and husband Rick; grandchildren, Kris, Brad, and Lindsay Stinson; sisters, Velda Leffel, Betty Moore Sherman, and Louise Montgomery; many nieces and nephews; a special niece, Denise Hamilton; and a special cousin, Jimmy Draper.

George was born and grew up in Boones Mill, Virginia. As a young man, George joined the Army, serving 8 years in the Army Reserves. He married the love of his life, Betty Murphy in 1957. Together they built a beautiful life with two children, Mike and Cindy. They later mastered the role of grandparents together with three grandchildren: Kris, Brad, and Lindsay. George lived a life of devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as his community. He and Betty were long-time members of the Williamson Road Church of God where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Council Member. God gave George a servant’s heart, allowing him to instill strong spiritual values in his family, just as his mother, Ruth, had instilled in him. He worked hard, giving his family all he could. Together, they enjoyed weekend camping and yearly Florida vacations.
George’s dedication was no secret to others, as he was known as a man of impeccable character marked by his integrity. He cared deeply for his mother and three sisters, watching over them like the protector he was. If any family member or friend was in need, he would always step up to help.
George enjoyed a long career with W. B. Clements, Inc. and Parts Central, Inc., working his way up as the company President. A successful entrepreneur, George started his own company, C & M Auto Parts with stores in Lynchburg and Bonsack, Virginia. He was proud of his accomplishments and always appreciative of his opportunities.
Over the years, George lived life to the fullest, acquiring many interests and passions. He was an avid Nascar fan, attending the Daytona 500 annually, along with many other races in the circuit. He even raced go-karts at one point in time. In his mid-forties, George decided to achieve his lifelong dream of piloting a plane and fearlessly did so. Anything he set his mind to is what he did. After conquering flying, he developed a passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He was the proud owner and rider of several models throughout the years, taking to the open road, occasionally making tours with Willie G. After retiring, he and Betty adventured for several years, traveling to many places and meeting new friends in their RV. George loved a good laugh and was often the instigator of a practical joke.

We all smile and know George lived large. He enjoyed every minute of a full and rich life, while never missing an opportunity to share his faith and acknowledge God’s daily blessings throughout his time here on Earth. To know him was to love him, and to also know just how big he smiled walking through those gates of pearl. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Hospice and Palliative Care or The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
