George William Hodges

George William Hodges, age 87, of Rocky Mount, died at Trinity Mission Nursing Home on Tuesday, September 04, 2007.

George was born February 20, 1920 in Franklin County to the late Joe and Mary Hodges. He served in the US Army during WW II, stationed temporarily in Nancy, France in 1943. He attained ranks of Infantry Basic, Rifleman, and Automotive Mechanic, wheel vehicle. He received a purple heart. His service ended November 15, 1945. George worked for Lane Furniture Company and J D Bassett where he retired at the age of 77. George was a member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church. George loved to share the Gospel. He held Saturday services at J D Bassett and shared Daily Devotions on local radio station WYTI. He also ministered to his fellow residents at Trinity Mission. His grandchildren recall how he enjoyed gardening and loved raising rabbits.

George is survived by his daughter, Nancy Amos; 2 sisters Lorene Hall of Rocky Mount and Susan Hodges of Snow Creek; 3 grandsons and wives, Kenny Amos, Roger and Kim Amos, Steve and Arlene Atkins; 3 great grandsons, Randy Amos, Nathan Amos, and “B” Atkins; 5 great granddaughters Amanda Amos, Candice Amos, Gabrielle Amos, Journey Atkins, and Autumn Atkins; companion, Shelby Dillon and extended family: Betty & Dan Spear, James & Carma Wright, Nancy & Frank Dillon, David & Lynn Wright, Mike & Janie Wright, Justina Wright & Chad, Devin Wright, Dianna Sink; step-daughter, Sally Hodges; 4 step-grandchildren; and very special friends Marvin Spicer and Virginia Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Dean; his parents Joe and Mary Hodges; his brothers, Charlie, Jesse, Joseph, and James; his sister Mary Hodges.

Funeral services for George W. Hodges will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 7, 2007 officiated by Joe Dillon at Flora Funeral Chapel. He will be buried at Mountain View Memorial Park.

Relatives and Friends are welcome at Flora Funeral Service on Thursday, September 6, 2007 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The family will be accepting visitors other times at the home of Nancy Amos at 220 Doe Run Road and the home of Shelby Dillon at 95 Spring Street.
