Georgia Davis Bousman Gourley, of Penhook, Va., died on Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born November 11, 1914, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert Giles Bousman, Sr. and Nannie Mae Walker Bousman. She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Arnett Gourley, Sr.; brothers, Travis C. Bousman, Robert Giles Bousman, Woodrow Wilson Bousman, William Jennings Bousman, Henry Murray Bousman, and Carlton W. Bousman, Sr.; and sisters, Doris Mae Bousman, Lolene B. Johnson Singleton, and Matilda B. Turbeville.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Frank A. Gourley, Jr. and Genene S. Gourley of Charleston, W.Va., Thomas P. and Donna R. Gourley of Penhook; and two daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara G. Law Collins of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Cathy G. Garrott and Jackson M. Garrott of Omura, Japan. Also surviving are one sister, Nancy Garner Bousman Breckinridge of Naples, Fla. and sisters-in-law, Ruby Ann Johnson Bousman of Eden, N.C., Elise G. Berkley of Danville, Va. and Earle Bousman of Stanardsville, Va. She is survived by grandchildren, Elizabeth "Libby" Gourley Read, Austin Gourley, Tammy Law Thomas, Melody Collins Whitener, Van Collins, Ruth Garrott Brown, Ann Garrott Snow, Jodi Gourley, Justin Gourley and Jillian Gourley; and nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Over the last few years she was given very special care by Norene Long, Mary Belle Hart, and Beverly and Joe Rutter. Georgia graduated from GW High School in Danville and was one of the editors of the school newspaper, "The Chatterbox." She later served as advertising manager for L. Herman's Department Store until April, 1940. She wrote newspaper articles and ads for "The Danville Register", "The Reidsville Review", and "The Greensboro Daily News. She was a faithful Christian and prayer warrior. Over the years she served as Director of Baptist Training Union for Reidsville, N.C., District, Sunday School teacher, choir member, Baptist Missionary Women member and officer. She was a member of the Piedmont Craftsmen's Guild of Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Albemarle Craftsmen's Guild of Elizabeth City, N.C.
Visitation will be held at Glade Hill Baptist Church on Saturday, March 17, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the church on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Long officiating, with burial in the family cemetery. At other times, the family will receive visitors at the home of Tom and Donna Gourley in Penhook, Va.
