Gerry (Danny) Danz, 76, of Moneta, Va, passed away Saturday, October 26 after succumbing to the long term effects of COPD. He kept his sense of humor to the last and, although frustrated by the limitations of the disease, made the most of later years. Gerry moved around a good bit as the son of an Air Force mechanic, Gerhard Danz and his wife Ann, before settling on Long Island in West Islip, NY, where he grew up and eventually followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted in the Air Force. Upon the end of his enlistment Gerry entered a career in sales that lasted until his retirement. Those who knew Gerry, knew him as a great conversationalist who always looked forward to the possibilities the future held. He was gifted with an enduring sense of humor and the ability to talk to anyone about anything. Favorite topics included current events, automobiles, existential matters, books, comedy, and movies. Gerry was a relentless and fierce card player no matter if it was poker, hearts, or canasta (especially canasta where he was known for opening up and going out in the same hand). His penchant for crushing your strategy to a fine dust was well known and evoked dread around the table. The man was just as relentless in his pursuit of coffee. Many of the aforementioned conversations were had over copious amounts of coffee. He could be seen reaching for his coffee cup right up until the end. Gerry’s laughter, love, and insights will be missed immensely by family and friends. Gerry is the son of Gerhard and Ann Danz (deceased) and brother to David Danz (deceased). He is survived by his wife Drue and son Zach, as well as sons Christopher and Jonathan and their mother Stephanie Danz, niece Ellen Danz (daughter of David), grandchildren Elliot and Althea (Christopher and Cristina) and Zora (Jonathan and Ginger). A small, private service for close family and friends will be held at Gerry’s home.
Godspeed, Dad.
