Gertrude Hodges

Gertrude Hodges, age 85 of Rocky Mount died Friday, July 8, 2011. She was born November 28, 1925 a daughter of the late Robert and Sallie Cundiff Ferguson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Kyle Smith and Roy Dennis Hodges; daughter, Mazel Shively; and grandson, Joe Shively. Gertrude enjoyed going to her church, fishing, quilting, and working at the farmers market. She was a member of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. She was a loving and caring mother whose best years of her life were when she was raising her children. Surviving are her children and spouses, J.R. and Diane Smith, Watson and Mary Ann Smith, Allen and Patricia Smith, Zelma and Monroe Boyd, Bernice and James Shively, Darlene and Mark Hudson; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren including special great-granddaughter, Makenzie Young; and special friend, Rose Hall. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Monday with Pastor Richard W. Thomas, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday with her family receiving friends 5-7 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
