Gertrude Chumley Hunt, 85, of 420 Orchard Avenue, died Friday, December 31, 2010, at Franklin Health Care Center after several months of declining health. She was born September 13, 1925, in the Redwood community to Willis Pinkard Chumley and Nannie Parker Mattox Chumley. She was married to Charlie Hunt who predeceased her in 1975. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a beloved sister and best friend, Christine Chumley. Surviving are her daughter Gail Hunt Swanson with husband Charles (of Chatham, VA); her three grandchildren, Drew Swanson with wife Margaret (of Cleveland, MS), Lucinda Swanson Austin with husband Jason (of Laurel, MD), and Anna Swanson (of Chatham); one great-grandson Ethan Swanson (of Cleveland, MS); and a special friend, Kathie Dudley Doss (of Glade Hill). Before the birth of her daughter, Mrs. Hunt was employed for a number of years at Glade Hill High School. Later, she worked for 30 years in the cafeteria at Ferrum College. She was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the caring nurses and staff at Franklin Health Care where she was in therapy for three months and to the wonderful nurses and doctors at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient three times this fall. She appreciated the attention and kindness of everyone who worked with her during her declining health. The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, and other times at the residence, 420 Orchard Avenue. Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, VA, on Monday, January 3, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Charles A. Swanson officiating.
