Captain Gilbert (Gil) Lane Nason, age 77 of Union Hall passed in his sleep, Tuesday, April 28, 2015 while vacationing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was born in Exeter, NH on August 4, 1937 a son of Freeman Nason & Beatrice Ayotte. He graduated high school in Westville, Indiana. A teenage roller skating champ, he helped develop new talent into champs under his tuteledge. Many became lifelong friends. Gil answered his call of duty in 1955 when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He excelled through the ranks, including field commissions in Vietnam. He was a decorated combat war veteran and retired after 22 honorable years as Captain. Gil subsequently chose to serve by helping others fulfill their insurance needs in Charleston, SC and later Danville, Virginia. Gil met and married the love of his life, Amy Prine Penland in Charleston SC, summer of 1993 and relocated to Smith Mountain Lake where he formed Nason Insurance Co. He was an active member of Faith Fellowship Church in Wirtz, VA. Survived by his wife of 23 years, Amy; sister, Virginia Lyddon (Donald); children, Mai Lynn (Dan) Peters, Kevin (Vicki) Nason & Cory (Joan) Nason from prior marriage to Elsie Wage; as well as step-children, Susan (James) Isaac, John Prine Jr., David (Jennifer) Prine, Jeremy Prine; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Fellowship Church with Pastor Gary Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. His family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 9 a.m. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
