Gwindolyn Board Phillips was born on June 13, 1919 as the first child of the late Onley S. and Essye Laprade Board and resided on the Roundview Farm home place in Glade Hill. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Board and wife Julia, George Board and wife Margaret, Tommy Board, Edgar Board and wife Ruby; sister-in-law Polly H. Board; and daughter Mary Ellen Phillips Keller. Gwin is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Don Phillips; children, Catherine and James Ashanky, Luray, Va. John and Cindy Phillips Columbia, TN.; grandchildren, Lauren and Eric Helm, Emily and Abram Loper, Shane Phillips, Johanna and Eli Klein, Matthew Fox, Chelsea Keller; six great-grandchildren; brother, Onley “Junior” Board; sister, Essyebelle Hudson and husband Ned; sisters-in-law Avis Board and Pauline Board; numerous nieces and nephews. Gwin was a registered occupational therapist and retired from the Salem VA in 1979. During her 93 years, Gwin lived her life in service to God, her family and others. All who knew Gwin were touched by her love, care, and generosity. Many people “talk the talk” of being a Christian, but Gwin’s life was a lesson in “walking the walk.” She was an inspiration to many generations who were blessed by her presence in our lives. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Gwin’s name may be made to Cool Spring Christian Church 15274 Snow Creek Rd. Penhook, Va., or Redwood United Methodist Church at 3001 Old Franklin Tpke., Rocky Mount, Va. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bradley S. Dulaney officiating. Interment will follow in the Board Family Cemetery. Her family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and also one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
