Hazel Shumate English, age 96 of Henry, died Saturday, January 12, 2008.

Mrs. English was born on September 27, 1911 in Henry. She was known for her hospitable home where family and friends visited regularly. She was the oldest member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Mrs. English was preceded in death by her husband, George William English in 1962; her parents, Daniel Harvey Shumate and Linnie Mae Prillaman Shumate; sisters, Emma S. Turner, Bettie Sue Shumate, Estelle S. Bryant, Ruby S. Shumate, and Lula S. Eggleton; brother, Thomas Clyde Shumate.

She is survived by one son, George William English, Jr. "Bill"; daughter, Patricia E. Jones "Pat"; grandchildren, Sarah Jones Owen and husband Carroll Owen, Bryan English Jones and wife Stacey P. Jones; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks and love to Goldie Bryant, the entire staff of Fork Mountain Rest Home and Betty Hood.

Funeral services will be conducted from Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Liz Lazenby and Rev. Henry Butler officiating. Interment will follow in Town Creek Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Angie Weddle, 2300 McNeil Mill Road, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Sunday with her family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount and other times at the home of Pat Jones.
