Hazel Rakes Shively

Hazel Rakes Shively, age 86 of Rocky Mount died Thursday, January 4, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Clemmie Rakes; her first husband, Oliver Quinn; her second husband, Carl Shively; and longtime companion and friend, Eurel Whitlow. Hazel is survived by her children, Joan Turner (Oscar) of Woolwine, VA, Dale Quinn (Susan) of Rocky Mount, VA, Peggy White (Bill) of Axton, VA, Judy Rusgrove (Danny) of York, SC and Carl Shively, Jr. of Rocky Mount, VA; 10 grandchildren, Travis White, Kevin Ferguson, Kerry Ferguson, Maygen Harris, Summer Shively, Jessica Bailey, Oliver Quinn, Gentry Turner, Tracey Carney and Travis Rusgrove; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Lewis Rakes of Ferrum, VA; and sister, Joy Hale of Stuart, VA. Hazel was retired from Continental Homes and was a dedicated caregiver. Special thanks to her caregivers, Cynthia Booth, Chrissy Martin, Janice Hodges and many others. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 8, 2018 with Rev. Bud Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Her family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
