Hazel Elizabeth Stephenson, age 75 of Ferrum died Tuesday, April 29, 2014. She was a longtime employee of Martin Processing and MW Manufacturers. She played a key role in the opening of Pulaski County Speedway in 1988 and worked closely with NASCAR officials in Daytona. Hazel also worked with Rick & Benny?s Lighting in Roanoke, and her last work was with Wal-Mart stores in Roanoke, Salem, and Rocky Mount where she retired as Customer Service Manager after 14 years service. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Edgar Lee Durham and Lucy Cook Durham; sister, Lillie Mae Snead, brother, Edgar Lee Durham, Jr. grandsons, Phillip Hugh Peters and Andrew Huff. Surviving are her husband of 29 years, Morris Stephenson; four daughters with Hugh Peters, Debra Huff (Red), Polly Peters, Teresa Patterson (David), Peggy Brown (Roger) all of Franklin County; stepchildren, Mike and Kim Stephenson of NC, Kurt Stephenson of Blacksburg, Kathy Stephenson of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Jennifer Holland, Blaire Patterson, Brandon Brown, Blake Brown; great-grandchildren, Logan, Emma, Olivia, James, Maddie; step-grandchildren, Brooke and Tye, Davis and Zeke; and special companion and fur baby, Mr. Victor (her schnauzer). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Morris Stephenson, 95 Old Craft Shop Rd., Ferrum, VA 24088 or Debra Huff, 111 Radford Lane, Ferrum, VA 24088 to help with the purchase of a wheelchair van for her special needs great-grandson James Holland. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Bruce D. Tuttle and Rev. Whitey Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
