Hazel Virginia Whitehead Washburn, age 89, of Snow Creek passed away on Saturday, May 03, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Claude Whitehead. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gordon B. Washburn, Sr. and by two brothers; Morris and Allen Whitehead.
She is survived by 5 daughters and 1 son. Daphne Jamison (Ron), Vivian Doyle (Jimmie), Claudia Bagby (Rodney), Ramona Simpson (the late Ken), G.B. Washburn, Jr.(Krystal), and Stephannie Mills (John). She also has 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grand children and 1 great-great-grandson.
Hazel was a lifelong member of Snow Creek Christian Church and served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and historian. She served the Snow Creek Fire and Rescue Squad as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Franklin County Farm Bureau and Southern States Co-op. For several years she was employed by the VA Coop. Ext. as an extension homemaker.
Recently she became a member of the Red Roses Franklin County Red Hat Society. She enjoyed the friendship, fashion and fun of this lively group of women.
Hazel loved sports and she was a loyal supporter of the Franklin County Eagles, the Atlanta Braves and the VT Hokies.
Funeral services will be conducted at Snow Creek Christian Church, 4970 Snow Creek Rd. Martinsville, VA at 2PM on Tuesday, May 6th. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Snow Creek Church or to the treasurer of the Snow Creek Auxiliary (9843 Sontag Rd. Martinsville, VA 24112).
The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM on Monday, May 5th at Snow Creek Church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
