Helen Sue Pence, 78, of Rocky Mount, Virginia went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 2, 2015. She was born on December 11, 1936 to Robert and Maude Carver of Gordonsville, Virginia. Helen Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Albert Pence, Jr. Helen Sue and Charlie were high school sweethearts at Orange County High School. The couple met while Charlie was refereeing one of Helen Sue’s basketball games and it was love at first sight. They married on September 1, 1956 and spent the next 50 years celebrating their life together in Alexandria, VA and Dale City, VA. Helen Sue was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Angela Pence Oliver (Kenny) of Rocky Mount, VA, and Mark Pence (Lisa) of Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Ashleigh Oliver, Brittany Oliver, Joshua Oliver, Trenton Pence (Becky), Justin Pence, and Paige Pence, and one great-granddaughter, Sadie Pence. Helen Sue is also survived by her five siblings, June Rosson of Louisa, VA, Doris Wiltshire (Charles) of Colonial Beach, VA, Bobby Carver (Sue) of Gordonsville, VA, Judy Rowe (Special Friend Gerald Wells, Sr.) of Staunton, VA, and John Carver of Orange, VA. Also left to cherish her memory are numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. Helen Sue lived life to the fullest by enjoying everything life had to offer. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends and took great pride in her children and grandchildren. She never missed a thing her children did growing up and was their greatest fan and cheerleader. Helen Sue was an awesome grandmother. She enjoyed playing games, watching cooking shows, painting fingernails, going to the zoo, and just doing whatever her grandchildren wanted to do. She looked forward to spending her Sunday afternoons watching her beloved Redskins attempt to play football and win a game. She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and any outdoor activity. You could always count on Helen Sue to be the life of the party. She never met a stranger and made everyone feel special and loved. A Celebration of Helen Sue’s life will take place on Monday, June 8, 2015. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service immediately following at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City, VA. Following the service, interment will take place alongside her husband, Charlie, at Fairfax Memorial Park. Funeral services were provided by Flora Funeral Services of Rocky Mount, VA and Mountcastle Funeral Home of Dale City, VA. Lastly, the family would like to thank all of the outstanding medical staff at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital for their care, kindness, and compassion. The family also wishes to thank “our” special nurse, Sarah Hughes.
