Helen Powell, age 89 of Rocky Mount went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday morning, February 1, 2011. Helen was born October 21, 1921 in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, New York to the late Elvera and Hjalmar Lehtila. In June 1956 she was united in marriage with Robert Thompson Powell. Helen was a devoted wife and a loving mother of two sons, as well as a dedicated sister, aunt and friend. Helen dedicated her life to helping and caring for others. She loved animals, enjoyed reading, and cherished time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed visits from her nephew Jimmy and his family over the years. After the passing of her husband, Helen made her final home in Rocky Mount, Virginia where she was a member of Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Elvera and Hjalmar Lehtila; her husband, Robert Thompson Powell; three sisters, Lillian Lawton, Linda Conover, Sieva Palmieri-Vollmer; and one brother, Bruno Lehtila. Helen is survived by her son, Robert Thompson Powell, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Jones Powell of Roanoke, Virginia; son, Donald George Powell and daughter-in-law, Jeanie Powell of Summersville, South Carolina; her beloved grandson, Robert Thompson Powell III; sister, Daisy Giery of Gainesville, Florida; and special friend, Eleanor Barry. Helen had many beloved nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly as well as dedicated caregivers and friends Barbara, Louise and Carol. Family will receive friends at Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 noon with Father Rene Castillo officiating. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
