Henry N. “Knob” Smith, 76 of Rocky Mount, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born January 17, 1933, to Joe Fonza Smith and Bertha Rigney Smith. In addition to his parents, preceding Knob in death were his sister, Myrtle Smith Law, brother Eugene Smith, and sisters Lizzie Robertson and Sally Smith Mayes. Knob was a humble, honest, hardworking family man. He always spoke the truth; his wife, three boys and grandchildren were the light of his life. Knob was a skilled brick mason and started a family business in the late ‘40s with his brother, Eugene. Later he passed along his appreciation for fine craftsmanship and commitment to excellence to his three sons, who joined Smith Brothers Brick Masons. Knob was also an avid outdoorsmen who very much enjoyed hunting and fishing. He leaves behind his loving wife of 41 years, Sheila; son, Henry Tyler (HT) Smith, daughter-in-law, Tammy and their children, Carly and Philip Smith; son Joey Lynn (BoBo) Smith, daughter-in-law Bonnie, and their children, Joey Lynn Smith, Jr., Emily Smith and Scott Waterhouse; son Anthony Leon (Petey) Smith, daughter-in-law, Kelly, and their children Shane Moore, Justin and Mercedes Baily and Olivia Jade Smith, whom Knob affectionately called “Sugarfoot”. Step-daughter Wendy Harrison Moore, and her children Tiffany Hunt, Ashley Smith and Jarrett Hodges; great-grandchildren, including Brayden Ledbetter. Also surviving are three sisters, Etheleen Smith Hall, Corena Smith Harrison and Lucille Smith Brown; many dear nieces and nephews; and a special nephew and hunting/fishing buddy, Teddy Hall . Funeral services will be conducted from Henry Fork Church of the Brethren 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Ron Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery.
