Herman “H.P.” Woody, age 78 of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked four years with Link Aviation. He returned to Sontag to work on the family farm in 1958 and also operated Lakewood Farm Supply. A lifelong Baptist, he served as a deacon at Beulah Baptist Church and was currently a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and on the building committee for the new sanctuary. He loved gospel music and greatly enjoyed his trips with Linkous Tours. He was a founding member of the former Sontag Ruritan Club, member of the Virginia ASCS Committee, former member of the Board of Directors of Franklin Memorial Hospital and First Virginia Bank of Franklin County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Stockton and Gaynelle Thornton Woody; brother, Joe Booker Woody.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Daphne M. Woody; children, David M. and Beverly Woody, Mary Evelyn and Richard Cook, Les and Sheri Woody, Jeffrey L. and Susan Woody; grandchildren, Lauren Woody, Bryan and Michael Woody, Amanda Robertson, J. Scott Woody, Stacey Hairston, Kristin Scott, Richard Alan Cook; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Shirley Woody; nephew, Joseph B. Woody, Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted from Franklin Heights Baptist Church 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. J. Larry Holland and Rev. Thomas C. Siddle officiating. Interment will follow in the Woody Family Cemetery.
The family request that memorials be made to Franklin Heights Building Fund, 110 Hilltop Drive, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday with his family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the church.
