Hettie Kelly Hodges

Hettie Kelly Hodges, age 96 of Rocky Mount died suddenly while riding home from the grocery store with her daughter on Thursday, November 10, 2011. She was born June 1, 1915 and was preceded in death by her parents, Elucian J. and Myrtle Robertson Kelley; her husband, Buford Dent Hodges; brothers, Jim, John, Ted, Tommy, Eldren and Norton Kelly; her sisters, Lena K. Wright, Blanche K. Brown, and Fannie K. Dudley; and a son-in-law, Donald Thurman. She is survived by her son, Bobby Dent Hodges and his wife Jean; daughter, Joyce H. Thurman; grandchildren, Cynthia T. Bates, Dr. Robert Bruce Hodges and wife Christine, Donna T. Simmons and husband David, Sandra Hodges Tamm and husband Tom, Stewart Thurman, Brenda T. Fowler and husband Billy. Her great-grandchildren are Lauren, Molly, and Brenna Hodges, Amelia Bates, Erin and Kayleigh Tamm, Jessica and Tyler Simmons, Gavin, Shaelyn and Raina Fowler. Also, surviving are several nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Janet K. Garrison and Mary Louise H. Maupin. Hettie received her license to become a hairstylist from Hollywood Beauty School in Roanoke after her children had completed their education. She worked at Hollywood Beauty Salon in Rocky Mount until her retirement at age 78. She was a faithful member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Bruce D. Tuttle officiating. Interment will be Private.
