Irene Virginia Oakes

Irene Virginia Oakes, age 86 of Redwood passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Richardson Oakes; infant son, Stanford Leslie Oakes; and parents, Jacob and Etheleen Wright. She is survived by her children, Denise Smith, Sheila Witt and Darrell Oakes (Mildred Pagans); grandson, Melvin Walker III (Spanky). Irene was a nurse for 30 years at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She loved to grow flowers and enjoyed canning. She was a sweet and loving woman. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 1707 Mt. Carmel Church Rd., Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery with Mr. Eric Ferguson officiating. Her family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the cemetery. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
