Iris Anne Thurman Powell, age 79 of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, February 20, 2011. She was born to the late Homer and Mary Thurman, September 23, 1931, in Rocky Mount, VA. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Thurman Layman; her brothers, Dewey Thurman and Donald Thurman; and her son, Allen Powell. She is survived by sisters, Lilda “Sis” Thurman Angle, Pauline Thurman Finn (Ed) and Juanita Thurman Stanley and brother, David Thurman; sisters-in-law, Joyce Thurman, Doris Nutter, Nancy Duffy, Liz Carter, Barbara Dunkley (George), and brothers-in-law, Bill Layman and Jim Powell (Carmel). Her surviving children are daughters, Deborah Miller (Bob), Melissa Gay (Glenn), Paula Stansky (Benjamin), and Maria Wise (Brant), and sons, Darrell Powell (Tiffany), Jake Powell, and Louie Powell. She is also survived by grandchildren, Matthew Powell, Deanna Spivey (Jason), Cricket (Jeff) Maiden, Travis Powell, Wallace Branin, Haley Branin, Joel Powell, Hannah Powell, Becky Powell, Melissa Powell, Kyle Stansky, Claire Stansky, Dewey-Weber Wise, and Winborne Wise, one great-grand son, Jake Spivey, and many nieces and nephews. Her family is grateful for her dear friend Starria Holland Board. The family extends heart-felt thanks to Iris’ caregivers, Bonnie Harlow and Annjalete and Warren DeVan. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on

, at Flint Hill United Methodist Church. A private burial will follow.
