J. Harlan Bowman, age 95 of Boones Mill, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wives, Edna Tenney Bowman and Mary Williams Bowman, parents, Luther Daniel Bowman and Loulie Webster Bowman; step-mother, Annie Mitchell Bowman; three brothers, Ray S. Bowman, Archer Webster Bowman, and James Orville Bowman; and one sister, Estelle Bowman Craig, brother-in-law, Noel Tenney, sister-in-law, Geneva Tenney. Surviving are his children, Harlan Otho Bowman (Ginger), Leon Bowman (Patty), and Karen Bowman Hodges (Lance); grandchildren, William Joseph Bowman (Anita), Carla Hodges Helton (Gary), Angela Hodges Easley (Trey), Deanna Mason (David), and Cherie Arrington (Kevin); great-grandchildren, Ariel Gabriele Bowman, Davina Michele Bowman, Joleigh Helton, Gavin Helton, Adalynn and Corinne Easley, Kalin Lynch, Tessa Mason, Morgan Lynch, Joseph Mason, and Nick Lynch; two brothers, Chester L. Bowman (Eleanor) and Mitchell Bowman (Bobbie); two sisters, Barbara Hopkins and Wanda Crickenberger (Tommy); step-daughters, Jan Jones and Sheila Smith; step-grandchildren, Donna Hill (Randy), Joyce Voorhees (Jay), Dawn Sutton (Matt), Adam McClenney; brother-in-law, Sam Tenney and numerous generations of nieces and nephews. Harlan had many hobbies such as wood working, working with model trains, bee keeping and with the help of his sons and grandson, they founded Bowman’s Bee Farm. Harlan started working at Franklin County Animal Breeders, later Select Sires, in 1947, retiring in 1991, while operating a small family farm.  He was in the Civilian Public Service during World War II. Along with being a lifetime member, Harlan served Bethlehem Church of the Brethren in many capacities such as a deacon and a scoutmaster. A graveside service will be held at Bethlehem Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021 with Rev. Bill Hinton and Pastor Horace Light officiating.
