J. R. Buckner, Jr.

May 13, 1924 — March 2, 2007

Listen to Obituary
John Robert (J. R.) Buckner, Jr., of Ferrum lost his long, courageous battle against cancer on Friday, March 2, 2007.

Born 82 years ago on May 13, 1924, J.R. was a son of the late John, Sr. and Frances Jamison Buckner. Mr. Buckner served in the Army during World War II, was an honorary member of the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department, attended St. James United Methodist Church, and retired from Davis Heating and Air over 50 years of dedicated service.

J.R. was a talented craftsman who could turn a piece of sheet metal into something extraordinary, and had a remarkable mechanical sense when it came time to fix just about anything. J.R. was always willing to lend a helping hand whether it be to a friend, whose furnace quit in the middle of the night, fixing a broken piece of farm equipment, or helping to pick grapes. J. R.’s lifetime passion was being outdoors and “up on the hill”: his concept of a perfect day was one spent walking in the woods with his dogs for it was there that he found his solace and source of energy.

Mr. Buckner was preceded in death by his half brother Fred Ingram, and sister Mildred Buckner.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Betty Ann Buckner, of the home; his children, Ann Buckner of Mineral, Phyllis Buckner of Thaxton, Debbie Scott and husband Mike, John Buckner III, Ferrum; grandchildren, Angela Martin, Stephanie Scott and husband Rhone Gravely, Jann Shorter and husband Rob, Jessica Scott, and Chad Scott; 6 great-grandchildren; one great-grandson to be born in May; sister, Helen Estes, Greenwood, SC; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel 2:00 p.m. Monday with Rev. Liz Lazenby officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. James United Methodist Church, c/o Kitty Martin, P.O. Box 308, Ferrum, VA 24088.

The family will receive friends Monday prior to the service beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
