James A. Hancock, Jr., age 85 of Rocky Mount, passed away Saturday February 23, 2008. Mr. Hancock was born February 1, 1923 to the late James A. Hancock, Sr. and Mattie McGhee Hancock. He served in the US Navy during WWII and later retired from the US Air Force. Mr. Hancock graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, and obtained one Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina and one Masters Degree from the University of Cal at Berkley. He was a Medical Physicist and later was a teacher at Perry McClure High School in Buena Vista. Surviving are his loving wife Elizabeth Ruffin Hancock; sons James A. Hancock, III and his wife Linda Ward, Kirkland R. Hancock, Douglas B. Hancock, Henry W. Hancock and his wife Liz; granddaughter Grace Elizabeth Hancock; grandson; Ian Ruffin Hancock; sister Earleen Reid and her daughter Laura; numerous members of the Ruffin family; In lieu of flowers his family asks that donations be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 101 Church St. NE, Rocky Mount, VA 24151 or to a charity of choice. Memorial services will be conducted from Trinity Episcopal Church 3:00 p.m. Monday with Co-Rectors John and Rachel Gardner officiating.
