James Herbert Cundiff, of Rocky Mount, a man of great faith, shed his earthly torments on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 and now resides in peace with his Lord and Savior. He was predeceased by his parents, Willie Thomas and Mattie Brooks Cundiff; brother, William (Billy) Cundiff; sister, Myrtle Carter; brothers-in-law, Benjamin Hunt, Lester Scott, Glee Scott; sister-in-law, Rachel Scott. Born September 22, 1932, Papa, to all that knew and loved him, is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Joyce Cundiff; daughter, Pam Cundiff and her husband, Tim Ratcliffe, and his only grandchild, Frances Cundiff, of whom he was very proud. He is also survived by his brother, Andrew Cundiff (Lottie); sisters, Jewell Hunt and Betty Hunley (Donnie); brothers-in-law, JA Scott, Waylon Scott (Gale); sisters-in-law Elva Cundiff, Edna Scott; special niece, Sheila Copenhaver (Vincent), who assisted both Joyce and Herbert during his health challenges. Left to remember his warm smile and sense of humor are numerous nieces, nephews, loving friends that he considered family; and his grand dogs, Dixie and Brody, who were faithful companions. Herbert's varied work history includes over 20 years as a supervisor with JP Stevens, successful Western Auto franchises and the Miller Brewing Container Division. During his retirement he enjoyed gardening and assisting at the office of Travel Consultants, Inc. in Eden, NC. He achieved many honors and degrees in his decades of devotion to the Masonic Lodge, served as an usher at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, and always had a helping hand and kind word for those in need. Services will be 11 a.m., Friday at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375. Many thanks to Dr. Hasanaj and the caregivers who provided thoughtful and loving care to Papa during this difficult journey. A celebration of life will be held Sept. 22, from 2-4 p.m. at the Morehead Fair House, 432 Boone Road, Eden, NC.
