James Walter Horning, 79, of Moneta, VA went to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 17, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Horning; brothers, John, Larry, and Michael Horning; sisters, Nancy Lewis, and Janet Cook.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Pat; sons, Douglas (Erica), Stephen (Kelly); grandsons, Matthew (Alicia), Tony (Crystal), Colby, and Ryan Horning; great-grandson, Weston; brother, David (Julie); sister, Linda Holliday (Richard); as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends.
Jim was born in Michigan on October 24, 1942 and graduated from Midland Senior High School in 1960. He served in the United States Navy from 1961-1966 where he was stationed on the USS Cadmus in Norfolk, VA and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He then joined Washington D.C.’s Steamfitters Local Union 602 until 1992 where he worked for the architect of the Capital, retiring in 2002.
He enjoyed being surrounded by family, camping, fishing and hunting with his sons, playing cards and games, as well as traveling with his wife.
Jim’s family will greet friends from 2-3 PM on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Redwood United Methodist Church, 3001 Old Franklin Tpke, Rocky Mount, VA 24151, with a service to follow at 3:00 PM. The service can be viewed at: https://www.facebook.com/redwoodumc/videos/
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Jim to Redwood UMC, 3001 Old Franklin Tpke, Rocky Mount, VA 24151 or to the Carilion Clinic Hospice facility at 390 South Main Street Suite 314, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
