James Herman Shively

James Herman Shively, age 79 of Ferrum died Monday, January 23, 2012 at his home. He was preceded in death by his son, James H. Shively, Jr.; his parents, Herman and Ruth Shively also of Ferrum. Jimmy was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his commission in the Marine Corps on his wedding day. He joined the IBM Corporation in 1956 and served as a Sales Representative for 33 years. Jimmy enjoyed service as the President of the Federal Little League in Hagerstown, Maryland where he was also a member of the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He subsequently served in the vestry of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Laytonsville, Maryland and more recently has been a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he has served on various committees. He has also served on the boards of First National Bank of Ferrum, Franklin Community Bank, the Advisory Board of BB&T and has also served on the Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital Board for 22 years. Jimmy maintained an interest in his neighbor, Ferrum College, where he has lent his experiences to various committees. Upon retirement, Jimmy planted trees and pursued interest in conservation organizations. He enjoyed hiking, rafting, and fishing with friends in Wyoming and in the Ferrum Community. He was devoted to and beloved by Buzz and Sugar, his De Coverly English Setter companions. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Nancy Perdue Shively; daughter, Cabell Shively; son and daughter-in-law, Elliott Shively and wife Angie; two grandsons, Craig Davis Shively and Jesse Ryan Shively; and brother and sister-in-law, John Shively and wife Ann of Big Island, Virginia. Memorial services will be conducted from Trinity Episcopal Church 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. John Gardner officiating. Inurnment will be private at High Street Cemetery. The family would like to thank his caregiver, Cindy Fralin, Carilion Hospice of Franklin County and Dr. Robert Strong for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 101 Church Street NE, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151 or to Phoebe Needles, 730 Turners Creek Road, Callaway, Virginia 24067. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
