Jeanne Troy Echternach

On December 8 ^th , 2021, Jeanne Troy Echternach passed away peacefully in her home. Jeanne was born on July 5 ^th , 1931, in Hazelton Pennsylvania to WR Troy and Catherine Troy. She graduated from Hazelton High school and headed to Philadelphia to earn her radiology technician certificate. While there, she met John “Jack” Lennox Echternach, a USPHS officer. They had a 4-year courtship and married in 1957.

Jeanne had many interests and passions. She always had a wonderful organic garden and was involved in the Norfolk Food Co-op for many years. She also worked on many political campaigns, was a part of the Peace Movement during the Cold War, was an active, successful participant in the stock market and owned and managed several rental homes in Norfolk.

Jeanne had an interest in early childhood development, volunteered at King’s Daughters Children’s Hospital and worked as an aide in Norfolk Public Schools. She studied childhood development at Old Dominion University and along with her husband, was pivotal in helping the school system to recognize and categorize various learning disabilities in the late 60’s. She later attended Virginia Wesleyan College earning her degree in Religious Studies.

Jeanne lost her beloved son, John Lennox Echternach Jr. in 2012, and her life partner, Jack, the following year. Her lifelong faith brought her through this trial with grace. She is also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Phil Werner. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Lyn Echternach of Dickerson, Maryland, daughter-in-law Deborah King Echternach, sister-in-law Lyn Werner and grandchildren, Jeff, Shawn and Jaimie Echternach.

Jeanne had several wonderful caregivers at the end of her life, and they were a Godsend. She was a member of Boones Mill Christian Church DoC and always appreciated the love and support of her church family.

A celebration of life at Boones Mill Christian Church DoC will be planned in January 2022.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Organization or Boones Mill Christian Church DoC.
