Jeannette Stringer Davis, 93, of Rocky Mount, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015. Although Jeannette was born and spent her early years in Tallapoosa, Georgia, she lived the majority of her life in Rocky Mount after she fell in love and married Joe Davis, the boy who sat behind her at National Business College. During their 61 years of marriage, they raised 5 kids. Sadly, two of their sons, Joseph Turner Davis, Jr. and Donald Allen Davis preceded them in death.
Jeannette was also preceded in death by her parents, Bernard R. Stringer, Sr. and Nellie Sue Allen Stringer as well as her brother, Bernard R. Stringer, Jr., all of Tallapoosa,Georgia; and her son-in-law Russell Beckett.
God's plan for Jeannette was definitely that of mother, wife, and homemaker. She was happiest when she was doing something around the home. It was not unusual for her to repaint the rooms in her house every couple of years, to make new curtains, or to plant yet another flower garden. But her kids remember her best for her cooking. In a word, it was legendary! They already miss her chicken noodles, turkey and dressing, and cornbread. As good as she was at cooking, she excelled even more at sewing. Her daughter's teachers would stand at the classroom door to see what Jeannette had sewn and embroidered for little Sue to wear each day. She sewed for lots of the ladies in the community to bring in extra money for the family. There was no one anywhere who could tailor a suit like Jeannette. Her kids thought she could do anything. Before they could afford a car, Donnie told her one day that she should get the parts and make them one. She was one of a kind in an era quickly disappearing.
Jeannette is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Sue (Davis) Beckett, and her sons, Thomas White Davis and John Mark Davis, all of Rocky Mount.
Also surviving her are two daughters-in-law, Mary Davis and Ann Nichols; 8 grandchildren, Laura Beth Myers (Matt), Jennifer Sue Booth (Barry), Martha Ellen Girard, Joseph Turner Davis III, Jared Tate Davis (Melissa) and David Allen Davis, Joey Allen Davis (Tabitha), Angela Michelle Cayse; 17 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
