Jerre Lumsden, age 78 of Glade Hill passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017. He was born in Franklin County in 1938. During 2016, Jerre had a number of health challenges, but was able to maintain his sense of humor every day. At the time of his death, he was a patient at Rocky Mount Rehab & Healthcare Center. Jerre was always proud to say that he lived in Franklin County. He served one term on the Board of Supervisors and two terms on the School Board. He was always interested in helping to meet the needs of the county. Following graduation from Franklin County High School, he went to Virginia Tech and was a member of the Corps of Cadets for four years. He graduated as a commissioned officer and proceeded to fulfill his military obligation with the U.S. Army. He served in the Army Reserves and then in the Virginia National Guard for a number of years. Jerre always enjoyed farm life. His years in farming included tobacco, dairy farming and beef cattle. Along the way, he became interested in real estate and held that interest for many years. He enjoyed the years with the business Redwood Market in the Redwood Community. Jerre was a member of the Redwood United Methodist Church. The family wants to thank the many people who helped him along the years: Dr. Jack Bumgardner and Dr. James Maxey. The staff at Rocky Mount Rehab & Healthcare Center, including the Therapy Department, the social services personnel and the outstanding nurses and CNAs of the North Wing. A very sincere Thank You to special friends Kathy Moore, Melissa Curry, Bruke Mikesell, John and Ronda Thomas, Jack and Illa Newbill, Donnie Davis and Homer Gant. Jerre was preceded in death by his parents John Curtis (Jack) Lumsden and Rebecca Perdue Lumsden. He is survived by his wife, Pat; two sons, John and James (Jim) Lumsden; and grandchildren, Jamie, Jocelyn, Benjamin, Patrick and Elise Lumsden. The family respectfully requests no food and that memorials be made to Redwood United Methodist Church, 2897 Old Franklin Tpke, Rocky Mount, VA 24151, to a Parkinson Charity or a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Bradley S. Dulaney officiating. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
