Jerry Oliver Custer, 61 lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, January 5, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Lorine Custer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Casey Bernard; grandparents, Will and Essie Bowles Custer, Abe and Ruby Mills Shockley; brothers-in-law, George Gravely and Billy Bernard. Jerry was employed by Interstate Equipment for 20 years and most recently by Price Building, Inc. He was member of Callaway Vol. Fire Department since 1972 and was a Captain of Callaway Rescue Squad which was started in 1991 and was a charter member. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Patricia B. Custer; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Amanda Custer; two wonderful grandsons, Brandon and Logan Custer; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry (Toni) Custer, Watt (Susan) Custer, Roger Custer and special friend Pamela Holland; sisters and brother-in-law, Katie (Tom) Lusk, Teresa (Joe) Bynum; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Frances (Tootie) and James Guilliams, Verna Gravely, Shelby Nemeth, Ronnie and Sue Bernard; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as his Fire and Rescue family. Funeral services will be held at Highland United Methodist Church 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014 with Pastor Jason Bryant and Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in the Custer Family Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Callaway Vol. Fire Dept., P. O. Box 1, Callaway, VA 24067, Callaway Vol. Rescue Squad, P. O. His family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
