Jesse Hughes (Buckeye) Moore, 68, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014. Born on November 19, 1945, he grew up on Tanyard Road in Rocky Mount with his beloved grandparents, Tipton Hughes (Pop) Hudson and Mildred Patterson (Maw) Hudson, both of whom predeceased him, as did his cousin, Laura Anne Williams; his step-father, Walter Lendford Dooley, Jr.; and his father and mother-in-law, Dillon and Minnie Minnix. Surviving Jesse are his devoted wife of 44 years, Louise Minnix Moore; his mother, Frances H. Dooley, Salem; his brothers, Dr. John N. Moore (Carol), Williamsburg, David A. Dooley (Pam), Vinton, Richard L. Dooley (Mandie), Vinton; and his sister, Mary Lou Campbell (Steve), Blue Ridge. He is also survived by his special nieces, Michele Sink Ralston (John), Aidan Hughes Ralston and Ashby Lee Ralston, all of Christiansburg; and special friend and cousin, John Clifford Simms, Jr. of Henry. Other survivors are his brothers and sisters-in-law, Linda Sink (Gary), Boones Mill, Bobby Minnix (Gerrie), Boones Mill, Debo Minnix (Pat), Boones Mill, Mary Ann Angle (Dale), Rocky Mount, and Sarah M. Harrison (Terry), Vinton; and aunt, Mary Louise Williams (Raymond), Rocky Mount. Also, left to cherish his memory are many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jesse retired from a career as a building contractor in August 1999 and then began working for Lowes Stores from which he retired in March 2013. He was a member of the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church where he served on various committees and sang in the Chancel Choir; he was a Past President of the Rocky Mount Lions Club. Jesse served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, and he remained a proud Marine throughout his life. He was elected Commander of American Legion Post 6 numerous times and was Commander of American Legion District 6 in 1995 and that year he received the Man of the Year Award. He was an avid antique car enthusiast and was a member of the Outlaw Cruisers. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Fintel and the staff of the Salem office of Blue Ridge Cancer Care; the nurses on 6 West of Lewis Gale Hospital, and Dr. Susan Myers for the compassionate care they provided to Jesse over the past eight plus years. The family also thanks the staff of Trinity Mission and Marsha Tyree for their care of Jesse in his final weeks. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Bruce Tuttle officiating. Interment will follow in the Minnix Family Cemetery. Flowers are welcome as are donations to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society Virginia Chapter at 5540 Falmouth Street Suite 101, Richmond, VA 23230. His family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
