John Douglas “Doug” Shearer, age 54 of Rocky Mount died Thursday, January 27, 2011. He was born June 28, 1956 in Rocky Mount, Virginia and was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter C. and Alverta Brown; and parents, John A. and Betty B. Shearer. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Dixie H. Shearer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Billy C. and Edith S. Hurt; brothers-in-law, Michael Hurt and wife Mary, Tony Hurt and wife Dreama, Billy C. Hurt, Jr.; his sister, Henrietta (Nettie) S. Shearer; special aunt, Lois L. Brown; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Doug was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Franklin County High School. He also held a bachelors degree from Lynchburg College. Doug was an Elder and life member of Rocky Mount Christian Church and also a Licensed Minister in the Disciples of Christ Church. He conducted services in various churches in the area including First Christian Church of Clifton Forge, Va. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday from Rocky Mount Christian Church with Dr. James Dickerson and Rev. Stewart Royce officiating. Graveside services will be private.
