Dr. John Lennox Echternach Jr., 54, of Boones Mill, passed away on Monday, July 2nd after sustaining a head injury from a falling tree during the windstorm last Friday. John, a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Boones Mill Volunteer Fire Department, was responding to a Fire/EMS call and attempting to help a motorist trapped in a vehicle when he was struck down by the tree. John joined the fire service at Clearbrook Volunteer Fire Department in 1992. He served as a volunteer for several years, before transitioning to Boones Mill Volunteer Fire and EMS Department in 2003 with his son. John assumed the role of Lieutenant at Boones Mill and continued to volunteer daily. John, a physical therapist for over 25 years, worked as a clinician for Professional Therapies, Inc., and recently accepted the position of Academic Clinical Coordinator and Professor in the physical therapy program at Jefferson College of Health Sciences. John loved the outdoors and had a great appreciation for God’s creation. He was active in scouting, attaining the rank of Eagle and serving in the Order of the Arrow. He worked many summers as a camp counselor at the Blue Ridge Scout reservation and devoted many years to leading the Clearbrook Boy Scouts. John and his family are members of Boones Mill Christian Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie, his children, Jeff Echternach and Jaimie Echternach, his parents, Dr. John Echternach Sr. and Jeanne Troy Echternach, and his sister, Cathy Echternach. Visitation will be held at the Boones Mill Christian Church on Thursday July 5 from 5 – 8 p.m. (7950 Grassy Hill Rd. Boones Mill, VA 24065). A memorial service will be held at the Franklin Heights Baptist Church on Saturday July 7 at 10 a.m. (110 Hilltop Dr. Rocky Mount, VA 24151), with Minister Paul Stutzman officiating.
