John Gilbert 'Gil" Farmer

John Gilbert 'Gil' Farmer, age 87, died Saturday, March 21, 2015 at home in Rocky Mount, VA surrounded by his family. He was born October 6, 1927 to Guy Edward Farmer and Mary Elizabeth Harris Farmer.
Gil grew up in Radford, Virginia. Following high school, Gil enlisted in the Navy and served 2 years. After the Navy, he attended Virginia Tech and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
Gil worked in the automobile business his entire career. He started in GMAC then moved to Rocky Mount to become a partner in Wickline Chevrolet. Eventually, he bought the business and operated as Gil Farmer Chevrolet until 1995. A resident of Rocky Mount for 48 years, he was a lifelong Hokie fan, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents Guy Edward Farmer and Mary Elizabeth Harris Farmer as well as his brothers Edward Walter Farmer and Jack Burnett Farmer.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Jean Davis Farmer; daughter Terry Lee Fralin; son John Parks Farmer and his wife Sophia; sister Elizabeth Grey Hjorth and husband Peter; brother Charles Gordon McDonald and wife Delores; 5 grandchildren Timothy Scott Fralin, Kristin Nicole Shively, Zachary Davis Farmer, Zoe Katherine Farmer and Alexander Zane Farmer; 2 great grandchildren; his wonderful nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends.
The best care you could hope for was provided to Gil and his family by Gentle Shepherd Hospice of Roanoke, VA. His family is so appreciative of the support and guidance offered by this organization.
Visitation will be held on Thursday March 26, 2015 from 1-3 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
