John Rabon Smith, age 79 of Rocky Mount died in his home Thursday, February 29, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Emily Smith; two daughters, Penny (Jeff) Smith and Lesley (Shannon) Wray; four grandchildren, Dylan (Isabella) Smith, Hannah Wray, Karlee Wray and Riley Smith; great-grandson, Wesson Smith; sister-in-law, Nancy Smith; two brothers-in-law, Benjie (Kathy) Pugh and Dale Pugh; four nephews, Joey (Whitney) Pugh, Josh (Diana) Pugh, Jeremy (Daphne) Pugh and Shannon Pugh; two nieces, Kristi (Jack) Norton and Kelli (Shawn) Shively; many cousins, great nieces and nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Virginia Smith; brother, Paul Smith; and nephew, Scott Smith.
Rabon retired from Angle Hardware in 2018, where he worked for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening and working in his shop. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his little dog, Minnie-Poo, all whom had his heart.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Flint Hill Community Cemetery (2536 Booker T. Washington Hwy., Rocky Mount, VA 24151) or Carilion Clinic Hospice-Franklin County (453 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, VA 24151).
A Celebration of Life will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2024 with Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. His family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
