John Douglas (J.D.) Tatum, age 78 of Henry VA passed away Saturday, September 10, 2016 at his home following a long courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers after 35 years of service and served with the National Guard for 6 years. He was also owner of This and That Antiques of Oak Level. J.D. was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school treasurer, usher and served with the van ministry. He was born August 15, 1938 and was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Mary Tatum. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Barbara Thomas Tatum; sons, John Thomas Tatum (Regina), Tracy Lee Tatum (Cyndi); grandsons, Darien Martin, Blaise Tatum; brothers; Gordon (Shirley), Kermit (Eltrue), Pat (Elizabeth), Lonnie (late, Marie) Bobby (Ethylene) and Billy; brother-in-law, Steve Thomas (Kaye); sisters-in-law, late Frances Naff (Junior), late Kay Williams (Jimmy), Carol Garlick (Chester), Pat Turner (Mike); several nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospice Services for their dedicated care and concern. Funeral services will be conducted at Mill Creek Baptist Church, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 with Dr. Brian Goard and Rev. Mike Magnani officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Monday at Mill Creek Church.
