John Charles Von Ohlsen, age 76 of Moneta passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007.
He was born October 6, 1930 a son of the late John Henry and Florence Van Horn Von Ohlsen. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the Korean Conflict achieving the rank of Sergeant and retired as Captain of the Ramapo Police Department, Suffern, New York with 37 years of service. Mr. Von Ohlsen attended Spring Valley High School and was also a Mason. He was a life member of Hillcrest Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the American Legion. He also served as past President of the Deer Creek Neighborhood Association, a volunteer at Smith Mountain Lake Welcome Center and Smith Mountain Lake Volunteer Marine Fire Department. He and his wife moved to Franklin County after his retirement in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Breden Von Ohlsen of Roanoke; son, John Louis Von Ohlsen of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy Ann and Brendan Donohue of Warwick, NY; sister, Dorethy Brown of Honesdale, PA; granddaughters Gabrielle Donohue and Nanci Ann Von Ohlsen; grandson William Brooks.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted from West Lake Baptist Church 4:00 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Rick Poland and Rev. Joe Taylor officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Scruggs Volunteer Rescue Squad P.O. Box 688, Hardy, VA.
