Joseph Andrew Ferguson, age 97 of Rocky Mount, known to family and friends as "Jack", passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 2, 2018. Born May 24, 1921 in Franklin County he was the son of the late Walter T. Ferguson and Icie Sink Ferguson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of almost 65 years, Nellie Boitnott Ferguson; son Dr. John E. Ferguson; sister, Pernie Ferguson Hetrick; and brother, Wilbur T. Ferguson. Jack is survived by his sister, Jewell Ferguson of Winter Garden Florida; son, Jerry L. Ferguson and wife Jackie of Rocky Mount; daughter-in-law, Dr. Kristi Jo Martinson Ferguson of Iowa City, Iowa; grandsons, Jerry, Nathan and Andrew Ferguson; granddaughter, Wendy Ferguson Grider and husband John; and great-grandchildren, John Thomas Grider III and Grace Elizabeth Grider; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack loved the land where he was born and raised, only leaving the family farm to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Jack was a lifelong member of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren. He spent many years as an active Boy Scout Master and scout leader mentoring several Eagle Scouts. For most of his life Jack grew crops, livestock, and chickens. He succeeded his father on the Roanoke City market and was a regular fixture there for more than 50 years. The family sold eggs and fresh dressed chickens for many years. Later Jack sold produce from a bountiful garden with the help of dear friend Kris Peckman. He loved his time on the market visiting with friends and customers, always eager to make new acquaintances. Special thanks to Dr. John T. Boone and Carilion Hospice Services of Franklin County. Funeral services will be conducted at Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren 11 a.m. Wednesday with Reverend Bruce E. Huffman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren, 2363 Brick Church Road, Rocky Mount, VA 24151-4017. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
