Listen to Obituary
Joyce Mae Hughes, age 64 of Rocky Mount died Monday, September 9, 2013. She was born October 7, 1948 to Alex William Hughes and Sallie Ann Hughes of Franklin County. She was later joined in life by her brother, Morris Lee (Ronnie) Hughes and later on a son, Greg. She attended Lee M. Waid and later Virginia Western Community College where she graduated. She started studying the Bible with Jehovah?s Witness in 1977 and made the truth her own attending the meetings and sharing the good news of God?s Kingdom to whomever would listen. Although her health turned worse, she never lost sight of a better day, no more sickness and death, and true peace with no suffering. Other things she enjoyed, friends, family, cooking, travel, comedy (loved a good laugh) and gardening. Her love for children led to a career in early childhood working for TAP Headstart and Family Preservation. Her personality and smile will be terribly missed by many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex William Hughes and Sallie Ann Hughes; and beloved nephew, Jamelle. Left to cherish the memory are son, Greg and wife Angela; brother, Ronnie; special friend, Angie; little buddy, Spaz the cat; her brothers and sisters in the faith; aunts, uncle, dear cousins, loving friends, and her "adopted" sons and daughters. A memorial service will be held at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah?s Witness (Wirtz) 1 p.m. Saturday with Brother Jeff Corbett officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, New York 11201 or the local congregation. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
