Julius Donald Fralin

After a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Julius Donald (Donnie) Fralin, age 82 of Bassett departed his earthly home for his heavenly home on Monday, December 11, 2017. Donnie was born May 15, 1935 to Ernest and Grace Fralin. Donnie is preceded in death by two wives, Lou Lynch Fralin and Imogene All Fralin. He is also preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Julian Obenshain and Dudley Lewis. Donnie “High Pockets” was a long haul truck driver for 40 years, driving first for Virginia Carolina (VC) and for Cargo Transporters at the time of his retirement. He was a devoted NASCAR fan. He traveled to many races, collected memorabilia, and watched most races on television. His favorite driver was Bill Elliot and currently he was a fan of Ryan Blaney. Donnie leaves to cherish his memory five sisters and one brother, Joyce Obenshain, Jessie Derey and husband Bud, Cynthia Strock and husband Terry, Nancy Lewis, Serena Jones and husband David, and David Lee Fralin. He is also survived by his step-sons, John Franklin and Tim All. Donnie is also survived by many nieces and nephews who lovingly called him "Uncle Donnie." He also leaves three special "sister" cousins, Jo Emma Houston, Sue George, and Mary Furrow and husband Wesley. The family extends thanks to the staff of the VA Veteran's Care Center in Salem, along with the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the Drs. at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center. A celebration of Donnie's life will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Flora Funeral Chapel in Rocky Mount, with Rev. Robbie Jones and Rev. Mark Washington officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family respectfully request no flowers or food.
