Listen to Obituary

Larry Alan Davids Sr, of Conway, South Carolina (formerly of Rocky Mount, Va.) passed away at Embrace Hospice House January 10, 2020 with family by his side.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Cathy Jo Davids. Larry and Cathy resided in Rocky Mount, Va for over 30 years and just recently moved to Conway, South Carolina to be near the ocean and where Larry hoped to do some pier fishing. Larry was born in New Jersey, September 16, 1948 to the late Preston and Lillian Davids. He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert “Bob” Davids.

Larry joined the United States Air Force in May 1969 and served until February 1973. He achieved the rank of SGT and served one year in Thule, Greenland as a Tech Controller and two years at Kessler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi as a T.I. After serving in the air force, Larry was employed at General Electric in Salem, Va where he retired after 30 years as an Automation Specialist. Larry had a heart to serve his community and joined the Boones Mill Fire/Ems Department in May 2005. He obtained his EMT and Firefighter certifications and served as EMS Captain for 6 years. In January 2011, Larry started to volunteer at the Office of the Sheriff, as a 911 Communications Officer. That turned into a full time position that he was extremely proud of. Larry retired from the Sheriffs office in November of 2019.

Larry and Cathy are members of Franklin Heights Baptist Church where they have been members for over 30 years.

Larry is survived by daughter’s Michele Lee Johnson (Melvin), and Angela Marie DeForest (Richard) and one son, Larry Alan Davids Jr. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jasmine Johnson, Brittany Johnson, Elaina Wheeler and one Great Grandson, Adrian Malik Divers.

A heartfelt thanks is owed to Tim Radford, who was more like family than a close friend. Tim was Larry’s special friend and travel buddy and he was with him and the family until the very end.

When Larry was not busy volunteering or working you could find him helping friends like Jimmy and Sue Bennett at Boones Mill Auto Service and helping Riley Peters at Boones Mill Fire Department. Larry had a heart of gold and loved to help people. He would always try to make a joke in any situation, even while in the hospital. Larry impacted so many lives and his passing will leave a void that can never be replaced.

Larry will be missed by his close companion and lap dog “Bella” as well as “Tango” who was rehomed prior to his move to South Carolina.

Special Thanks to the nurses and staff at Conway Medical Center, Medical University of South Carolina and Embrace Hospice House for taking such good care of him and the family during our time at each location.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to be made to Franklin Heights Baptist Church or Boones Mill Fire Department.

The family is thankful for all the family and friends who traveled from Va to Sc to visit Larry and family and offer support and for the many prayers, phone calls/texts and cards that were received during his illness.

Services will be held Saturday, January 18, at Franklin Heights Baptist Church 110 Hilltop Dr, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151. Visitation will begin at 1:00 and the service at 3:00. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Holland and Carol Johnston. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
