Larry Herman Oakes, of Rocky Mount passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the age of 60. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Flora Oakes; and his wife, Phyllis Wingfield Oakes. He served in the United States Army in the Republic of Vietnam. During his service, he received the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in combat. He was very proud to serve his country in the United States Army. Surviving are his daughter, T.J. Agee and husband Scott; son, Cale Oakes and wife Traci; four grandchildren, Kevin Sawyer, Caleb Oakes, Tanner Oakes and Jackson Agee. He is also survived by his fiancé, Vickie Dalton; brothers, L.D. and Teddy Oakes; and his sister, Diane Ashby. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517. His family will receive friends from 12-3 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the home on Bowles Valley Road. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
