Lcdr James H. Wheaton, Usn,Ret.

LCDR James H. Wheaton, USN, Ret. age 88 of Penhook died Friday July 29, 2016 at his residence. Born March 31, 1928 in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late James Harold Wheaton and Betty Bell Wheaton. He retired from the U.S. Navy following 30 years active duty serving in Asia, Pacific Theater, European Theater, WWII and Vietnam. He graduated from San Diego State University and taught with the California Community College System. A life member of VFW Post 10840, he served as Post Commander several years. James was a faithful and active member of Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren. He was preceded in death by his step-mother Ruth Wheaton, and a sister, Kim Yerly. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Brenda Stegall Wheaton, step-son; J.D. Strait, step-granddaughter; Heather Leroux (Joey), two step- great-grandchildren, two nieces, Julie and Chris, special friends; Kathy and Euell Overstreet, Booker and Sue Haynes, Shiree Ashby, Florence Wright, Betty Kirk and Alvin Tosh who provided so much time and care. Also many other family and friends that meant so much. Memorials may be made to the Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren or Carilion Hospice Services of Franklin County. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren with Pastor Mike Gallimore officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
