Leo Hamilton Scott, 84, of Ferrum passed away at his home February 6, 2017. Leo was born on July 5 th , 1932 on the campus of Ferrum Training Institute, now Ferrum College, where his father served as Farm Manager for many years. After graduating from Ferrum College in 1951, he worked at the Angle Silk Mill before founding Leo Scott Cabinets, Inc. in 1953. For 37 years, he supplied custom cabinets to many homes and businesses throughout the Southeast. In 1983, Leo purchased ten Red Angus cattle and started KC Farms, growing his herd to become one of the largest breeders and sellers of registered Red Angus in Virginia. A hard-working, humble, faithful and generous man who exemplified his beloved alma mater’s motto, “not self but others”, Leo was a pillar of the community. He served in many leadership roles over the years. He was a founding member of both the Ferrum Rescue Squad and the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department. For many years he served on the board of the Ferrum Water & Sewage Authority. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Carter Bank and Trust, as well as an active member and trustee of St. James United Methodist Church. In 2001, Leo was awarded Ferrum College’s highest alumni award, the Benjamin M. Beckham Medallion. In 2013, he was named Franklin County’s Farmer of the Year by the Franklin County Retail Merchants Association. Leo is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Sallie Scott, his son, Michael Leo Scott; his brothers Grady (Pauline), Nelson (Bland), Grover (Effie), Lewis, W.B. (Eva), Paul (Ruby), Fred (Polly); and sisters Elma (Claire) Young, Wilma (Bernard) Woods, Nellie (Clem) Rakes. Leo is survived by his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Geraldine Nolen Scott; grandson Chase (Jessie), great-grandchildren Chase David and Anna Leigh who reside in Ferrum; granddaughter Kelli (Brandon Uttley), great-grandchildren Miles and Olivia who reside in Huntersville, NC. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Leo’s life will take place Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 2 pm at Vaughn Chapel on the campus of Ferrum College, with the Reverend Mary White and the Revered Liz Lazenby officiating. The burial will follow at St. James cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Special thanks to Carilion Clinic Hospice, Frances Sink and Deborah Roberge, who provided Leo and his family generous support in the past few days. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers and food may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department and Ferrum Rescue Squad. Flora Funeral Services is serving the family.
