Leonard “Pooner” Shipman Martin, Jr., age 92, of Boones Mill, faithfully served the Lord throughout his life. On March 4, 2026, he peacefully entered Jesus’ presence, leaving behind a legacy cherished by all who knew him.
Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Patsey Ann Martin; and his cherished daughter, Melanie Kay Martin; his parents, Leonard Sr. and Ellen H. Martin Garnand; sister, Mary Frances Overfelt (Dave); brothers, Jack Martin (Juanita) and Herbert “Boce” Martin (Annie). Leonard is remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families, all of whom were touched by his life. He was blessed with a special friend and caregiver, Sue McAllister, who was always there for him, and Debra Didlake, who he considered a daughter, that offered loving support.
Called to serve at the young age of 16, Leonard began teaching God’s word with wisdom and truth. He devoted his life to sharing his faith with friends, family, and through his ministry. A man of deep devotion, Leonard proudly served in the Army and later worked alongside his brother in the stone construction business, Martin Brothers Stonework. Through his stories and steadfast faith, he impacted countless lives, and his legacy remains in the hearts of all who listened. Many were blessed to have stopped by his home for a cup of coffee, a few laughs and insightful conversation.
Leonard was highly respected by all who knew him. He was known for his warm smile and friendly gestures, often embracing others with a hug. He enjoyed sharing mischievous stories from his younger years, bringing laughter to those around him. Leonard enjoyed cars and never turned down a challenge to race in his Oldsmobile. With his loving heart, he was always grateful for the assistance of friends and family, no matter how small it may have been. Above all, he was thankful for the blessings the Lord provided, especially his salvation.
In his final days, when asked about his favorite scripture, Leonard expressed his appreciation for God’s word, saying, “All scripture is precious because it shows the Majesty of God.” He shared, at that time, his favorite verse as Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
As we mourn his departure from this world, we take comfort in knowing that Leonard is now filled with joy, having met his Savior face to face, and now reunited with his wife and daughter.
