Leslie Richardson Oakes, 76 of Glade Hill passed away March 15, 2007.
He was born in Pittsylvania County June 11, 1930, one of thirteen children born to Tasville Carr and Lula Yeatts Oakes. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Stanford Leslie Oakes; five brothers Charlie, Henry, Eugene, Kelly and his twin brother Letcher; four sisters Eva, Cordie, Lila, and Gladys.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-six years Irene “Rena” Wright Oakes; his three children and two sons-in-law Denise and Don Smith, Sheila and Paul Witt, son Leslie Darrell Oakes and friend Mildred Pagans; one grandson Melvin G. Walker, III.
He also leaves his precious Yorkies Peaches and Buzz; two brothers and their wives Carlton and Bernice Oakes, Curtis and Estelle Oakes; one sister Bernice Oakes; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
Leslie was a Korean War Veteran, retired farmer, carpenter and a friend to many people. He was also a member of the Snow Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Flowers will be accepted or donations in Leslie’s memory may be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 1707 Mt. Carmel Church Rd., Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Paul Stone and Rev. Glen Voss officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.
His family will be receiving friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
