Lois Hutcherson English, 91, of Rocky Mount, passed away at home August 4, 2015. She is survived by daughters Catherine A. English, LouAlice (Jerry) Weddle, and Betty (Billy) Kingery; seven grandchildren: Ros (Catherine) Kingery, Jim (Suzanne) Dillon, Lettitia (Steve) Furrow, Jerryann Weddle, Ann-English (Russell) Weaver, Marcie (Justin) Altice, and Julie (Ed) Lavado. Ten great-grandchildren: Will Kingery, Ethan Furrow, Grayson Altice, Caitlyn Altice, Benjamin Furrow, Grant Kingery, Porter Dillon, Clara Catherine Weaver, Barrett Dillon, and Caroline Weaver; nephew Richard Hutcherson and niece Gail Hutcherson. Lois was preceded to Heaven by her husband of 43 years A.M. English, Jr., parents Madison and Beulah Jamison Hutcherson, brother and sister-in-law Ralph and Ruth Hutcherson, and nephew Robert Hutcherson. Lois’s life was centered around her motto that being a Christian mother was one of the highest callings for a career woman. She was honored by former governor Chuck Robb as the 1983 Virginia Mother of the Year. Lois was a faithful, devoted member of Doe Run Christian Church her entire life; serving as pianist, organist, choir director, teacher, VBS director, SS Superintendent, Board Secretary, Elder and Trustee. She graduated from Radford State Teachers College in 1944 and married her childhood sweetheart, A. M. in 1949. She started her teaching career in Moneta and continued in Franklin County. Prior to her teaching retirement, she accepted the position to centralize the Food Services in Franklin County Public Schools. Lois influenced many individuals during her lifetime. She instilled in her daughters and her students the importance of being active in the community. She exemplified this by setting the example. She served Franklin County as a member of the Board of Supervisors and served a term as Chairperson. She was a life member of the Franklin County Rescue Squad and Auxiliary, Franklin County Education Association, Band Boosters, Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher’s Sorority Golden Sister (50 year member), Franklin County Democratic Party, Red Cross, STEP, 4-H Leader, Honorary 4-H All Star, Advisor for Hi-Y/Tri Hi-Y, FHA, Young Homemakers of VA, VA Home Economics Teacher Association, and American Vocational Association. The family expresses their thanks and appreciation to the caregivers during her lifetime, Kay Jensen, Sheena Chambers, Elise and Gloria Harrison, and Carilion Clinic Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Doe Run Christian Church, 3536 Doe Run Road, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.Flora Funeral Service is handling arrangements. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Flora Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be Friday, 11:00 am at Doe Run Christian Church followed by burial in the English Family Cemetery.
